Humanities Lecture: The Lonesome Democracy of American Poets

Presented by Matthew McDonald

The charge to be an individual, to be “small and clear and free,” as our living poet John Ashbery puts it, often seems in bitter conflict with the aspiration to a cooperative and just democracy. In search of visions of truce, this lecture asks our poets, as well as our philosophers and political thinkers, about the house divided against itself that may be found within the ordinary life of any American. That these poets do not give one shared vision is both the sting and the consolation in reading them.

Any one interested in poetry, self & society, philosophy, politics, American Studies and more will want to attend.  Participation will be encouraged!  See our fliers across campus for other lectures in this series.
